Sharp: 50 years strong in copier business
Sharp is proudly celebrating 50 years in the document business. It all started when we released our first ever copier in 1972, the wet toner copier SF-20. It was developed from scratch by a small group of Japanese engineers who had little previous experience in the field. It was a major challenge for Sharp at the time, as copiers feature complex mechanisms. The new development brought together technologies from various fields including electronics, optics, mechanics and chemistry.

The wide adoption of Sharp printers came quickly. In the same year of releasing our first copier, we increased the line-up by producing a mass market model and a high end model. Just two years later, we exhibited the machine at the Hannover Messe in West Germany, where many major office product companies around the world came to see it. Sharp subsequently received official requests for OEM (original equipment manufacturing), to manufacture copiers to be sold under other companies' brand.
